Wilton Rancheria, the only federally recognized Tribe in Sacramento County, proudly holds the distinction of being California’s Capitol Tribe. Comprising primarily Miwok and Nisenan people descendants of the Penutian linguistic family our community has called the Sacramento Valley home since time immemorial. Established in 1928 on 38.77 acres of trust land in Wilton, California, Wilton Rancheria faced a significant challenge in 1964 when the passage of the Rancheria Act resulted in the loss of federal recognition. Through the steadfast leadership of our Tribal Elders and a determined legal battle, federal status was successfully restored on June 8, 2009, reaffirming our sovereignty and commitment to our people’s future.
Guided by a modern constitution adopted in November 2011, Wilton Rancheria operates under a robust governmental structure that includes a General Council, an Executive Branch, a Legislative Branch, and a Judicial Branch. Our Tribe is dedicated to preserving our cultural heritage, advancing self-governance, and fostering opportunities for economic development and community well-being. With deep respect for our ancestors and a forward-looking vision, we continue to honor our traditions while building a sustainable future for current and future generations.
