Van Alstyne Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Van Alstyne, Texas. The town was officially established on May 3, 1873, following the Houston and Texas Central Railway’s purchase of land from William L. McKinney, a minor who inherited a large estate from his family. Named in honor of Maria Van Alstyne, widow of railroad employee and stockholder William A. Van Alstyne, the town holds the unique distinction of being the only community in Grayson County named after a woman. Early on, businesses relocated from nearby Mantua to the new town, establishing Van Alstyne as a growing center of commerce and community.

The Van Alstyne Historical Society is committed to preserving this heritage while engaging the community through educational programs, historical research, and restoration initiatives. By fostering awareness and appreciation of the town’s origins and development, the society ensures that Van Alstyne’s distinctive history is maintained for both current residents and future generations.
