Colleen Schafroth, Director Emeritus at Maryhill Museum of Art will share about Maryhill Museum of Art’s history from its inception by Sam Hill and Loie Fuller through her time at the museum—its successes, challenges, and rewards—from her perspective.A longtime resident of the eastern Columbia Gorge, Colleen Schafroth joined the Maryhill Museum staff in 1986 as Curator of Education, developing and implementing educational programs for all ages. In May 2001, the Board of Trustees appointed her as Executive Director. She has over 45 years’ experience in museums and the arts, 37 years at Maryhill. Over her tenure, Colleen worked on various community boards and committees serving the arts, taught, and presented workshops and seminars on the arts for teachers and art appreciators. Currently she is volunteering at Maryhill teaching at the Summer Art Institute. Schafroth is published: essays as well as books, most notably she has written Sculptures in Miniature: Chess Sets from Maryhill Museum of Art (1990), The Art of Chess (Abrams, 2002 with German & French Editions), and several Educator’s Guides to the collections of Maryhill. She holds a B.A. in English and a B.A. in Art as well as a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies on art history, history, and museum studies from Oregon State University.
