TWM Helps Secure More Than $6.8 Million in ITEP Grant Funding for Transportation Projects in Southern Illinois
TWM, Inc., one of the top engineering and geospatial firms in the greater St. Louis area, is proud to have played a key role in helping secure grant funding for three local transportation projects. These projects were recently announced by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and were part of 66 projects overall that were approved through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) to expand local travel options and create more connected communities statewide.ITEP is a crucial part of Rebuild Illinois and awards are focused on improving bike and pedestrian paths and trails, streetscape beautification, and other surface transportation projects designed to encourage safe travel. Thanks to Rebuild Illinois, record funding was made available during the competitive call for projects, with approximately 74% directed toward communities that showed the greatest financial need. This was the largest investment in the program’s history, with $139.2 million allocated to improve multi-modal transportation and support community-driven infrastructure.
Each of the recognized projects was selected for its innovative approach to improving local transportation options and its alignment with broader goals of safety, access, and sustainability. TWM worked closely with the municipalities involved to identify funding opportunities, navigate and prepare successful grant applications, and develop concepts that aligned each project with ITEP’s funding priorities and strategic transportation goals for long-term success.
THE THREE PROJECTS AWARDED WITH TWM’s ASSISTANCE INCLUDE:
- Highway 50 Shared-Use Path | City of O’Fallon: Construction of a new 10’ wide shared-use path on a heavily trafficked corridor will create a safe, multi-modal transportation network for pedestrians and bicyclists. High-visibility crosswalks, rapid flashing beacon installations with refuge islands, traffic signal and transit stop upgrades, and a 60’ pedestrian bridge are planned.
- Bunkum Road Trail – Phase 2 | St. Clair County Transit District (Belleville, IL to Fairview Heights, IL): Construction of a 0.75-mile 10’ wide shared-use path designed to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists. Crosswalks and concrete pedestrian ramps with detectable flashing beacon warnings will be installed and a pedestrian bridge over I-64 will integrate this corridor segment into a growing trail system that connects neighborhoods to civic buildings and the commercial district.
- Glen Carbon Road Trail – Phase 3 | Village of Glen Carbon: The extension of a 10’ wide shared-use path with barrier curb and gutter and ADA-compliant ramps and detectable warnings will provide safe off-road accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists. This project will connect a path from all the subdivisions along Glen Carbon Road to the park and commercial corridor along IL Route 159.
From early grant guidance to final design, TWM remains committed to partnering with municipalities and local agencies throughout Illinois to deliver strategic funding support and technical expertise that helps projects succeed from the very start.
