‘Centennial on 66’: Madison County Announces Student Poster Design Challenge

Madison County is inviting young artists to get their kicks on Route 66 to celebrate 100 years of the 'Mother Road.'

The Madison County Board and Regional Office of Education are teaming up to launch the Route 66 Student Poster Challenge, a countywide art contest inviting K–12 students to design original posters inspired by the historic highway, first commissioned in 1926.

Students are encouraged to create original posters that honor Route 66’s legacy in Madison County — from classic cars and neon signs to historic sites

“Route 66 is more than just a road — it’s part of our national and local story,” Chairman Chris Slusser said. “This contest is a chance for students to explore that history, express their creativity, and help us celebrate a century of the Mother Road.”

The contest is open to all K–12 students in the county and will celebrate the upcoming 100th anniversary of the historic event.

Regional Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Werden praised the contest as a meaningful way to connect students with community heritage.

“This is an exciting opportunity for our students to learn about the history right in their own backyards,” Werden said. “It encourages artistic expression, civic pride and engagement with one of the most iconic highways in America.”

The contest is one of many initiatives planned to celebrate the Route 66 Centennial in Illinois, where the famous road begins. Madison County’s role is especially significant — not just because of its geography, but because of its stories, architecture, and people.

“By inviting students to interpret Route 66 through their own lens, we’re connecting generations,” Slusser said. “We’re not just honoring the past—we’re inspiring the future.”

CONTEST DETAILS:

Posters will be judged in four grade categories: K–2, 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12. First-, second-, and third-place winners in each category will receive gift card prizes and recognition. Selected posters will be featured in Route 66 centennial displays throughout 2026, including at Edwardsville’s West End Station.
